One of the key processes in steel making is hot strip rolling. At Hot Strip Mill 2 in IJmuiden steel slabs with a length of 10 m and a thickness of 20 cm, weighing over 20 tons, are heated up to a temperature of 1200 ºC. Along a trajectory of about half a kilometre they rolled in consecutive steps into strips of up to more than 1000 m long and 2 mm thin.
The final reduction steps, where a strips can reach a speed over 20 m/s, are very critical. Errors in the operation of the installation can lead to straightness deviations in the shape of the strip, which in the worst case may initiate a chain of events damaging the rolls of the mill.
You will be working on Strip Tracking Control. The challenge is to improve our models that are used to predict the effect of the possible misalignments of the rolls on the curvature of the strip. These models can in turn be used to improve the control of the mill and thereby to prevent strip tracking issues.

What can we offer?
At the start of the assignment you have to become familiar with the theory behind existing models that relate level errors of the mills to curvature of the strip. In addition you need to find your way in the process data of Hot Strip Mill 2 so that you can apply these models for real situations. Once you have established some routine in acquiring and analysing data you can start to explore the boundaries of our current understanding. There are still many open questions but one of the topics we would like you to address is the change of level errors over the length of the strip from the head-end to the tail end, and the change to the head-end of the next strip. For this purpose you will extend our MATLAB models. You will finally run your calculations over big data sets. Your ultimate goal would be to translate the findings into improvements in the online control.
During your assignment you will join one of the D&M group project teams and you will be coached by one of our researchers. Of course you will also visit our impressive installations.
