What's your job?

One of the key processes in steel making is hot strip rolling. At Hot Strip Mill 2 in IJmuiden steel slabs with a length of 10 m and a thickness of 20 cm, weighing over 20 tons, are heated up to a temperature of 1200 ºC. Along a trajectory of about half a kilometre they rolled in consecutive steps into strips of up to more than 1000 m long and 2 mm thin.

The final reduction steps, where a strips can reach a speed over 20 m/s, are very critical. Errors in the operation of the installation can lead to defects in the shape of the strip (see figure) and in the worst case also to damage to the rolls of the mill.

You will be working on the detection of shape defects. The challenge is to develop software tools to detect certain shape defects as accurately as possible. Such tools may enable pinpointing the actual cause of such defects and finally preventing them

Is this you?

You are a Msc student in a field of exact sciences or engineering such as Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering. You have hands-on experience with MATLAB and you are familiar with Fourier analysis. You are ambitious and result driven. You like to tackle complex problems and enjoy converting abstract ideas into practical solutions. You want to experience what it is like to work in an industrial R&D environment.

At the start of the assignment you have to become familiar with existing algorithms to detect shape errors from images of the strip surface. Next you will need to specify how you will convert an such an abstract algorithm into MATLAB code and create a basic application that can actually be used to detect shape defects in strip images coming directly from the inspection systems of Hot Strip Mill 2. In the final stage of your assignment you will get the opportunity to set your own direction. Depending on your skills you can for example enhance the MATLAB code, compare alternative approaches for detecting shape defects or actually start analysing more data. The ultimate goal would be to create a standard tool for the group based on the best available approach to detect certain shape defects, validated for a large number of strips.
During your assignment you will join one of the group project teams and you will be coached by one of our researchers. Of course you will also visit one of our most impressive installations.
