In an era where your opinion is spread rapidly, it is important to think about how you exhibit this. It could be that your future employer does not like the way you talked negative about your education, how you complained about your supermarket job or that time you called in ill while you had a hangover. It is time for a lesson ‘How do I present myself to the world’ or personal branding.
Personal branding, it sounds kind of fancy. But on the contrary. Where not long ago only famous celebrities could pull of a brand, now the ordinary person can brand himself quite as well. We owe this all to the online era we are living in, everybody can tweet, respond to (international) articles or make a public Facebook page.
Everybody can see you. This also means that you need to be careful, your image can be damaged easily and you almost can’t undo this. So what are the do’s and don’ts to keep your digital image scratch free?
- Google yourself regularly. It is important to keep track about everything you can find about yourself; a future boss will also Google you. Be aware that every post or photo can turn up in Google; even if your profile is shielded.
- Be positive and with passion. If you do your job with love, you will carry this forward to other people. Without making a lot of effort. Who doesn’t want to work with someone that is passionate about what he or she is doing.
- Be visible and be representative! This way Google can’t be in your way
- Stay consistent. Every Social Media page should look somewhat alike, for instance use the same photo everywhere. Or you could always use the same profilename.
- Describe your brand and bring it to live. Make your brand textual and spread the word. In this way you can show what you are capable off. This will make it easier to talk to employers and clients.
- Be an expert in your field of range. Read books and visit workshops. Be aware of all the ins and outs in your field of expertise.
- Be responsible for your own actions. Everybody makes mistakes, so don’t be too proud to admit your mistakes. See it as positive feedback you can use to improve yourself.
- Think you don’t need a personal brand. You got one, if you like it or not. Even if there is nothing when you Google someone; that is your personal brand.
- Being selfish. Of course your personal brand is about yourself, but not all your tweets, posts and reactions have to be about yourself. Even in the digital world silence is golden. Listening to someone else from time to time is really valuable and you will show the best side of you.
- Lie about your abilities. Don’t ever do this! Announce at Twitter that you’re a star in communication-advice because you think this is interesting. Eventually they will find out this isn’t true.
- Be negative. We know not everything is about roses, but negativity is never appreciated.
- Forget your own personality. Of course you need to watch what you are saying. But never letting people know what you think will make you very impersonal. At the end it still is your personal brand.
- Ignore Social Media etiquette. Don’t spam Facebook, people with Tweets or ignore rules in LinkedIn-groups. It is unprofessional and you will detract more people than you will attract.
- Don’t take yourself to seriously. Of course you need to be an expert in your field of range, but don’t call yourself an expert. This will only show how you think about yourself, instead of showing what you really are.
